Founded by Lorraine Vaillancourt, the NEM is a chamber orchestra presenting impressive performances of contemporary music.
Over the last 30 years, the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM), in residence at the Université de Montréal’s (UdeM) Faculty of Music, has given over 520 performances of all types (concerts, public rehearsals, workshops, opera, etc.).
Lorraine Vaillancourt (founder) is the music director.
The ensemble is made up of 15 permanent musicians. During these performances :
- More than 800 works were interpreted;- More than 280 were presented as new works;- Over 100 were commissioned by the NEM;- To composers from Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
In addition, there have been 13 editions of the International Forum for Young Composers, 18 editions of New Music session and some 40 tours, bringing the Ensemble to Asia (China, Japan and Singapore), Australia, the United States, Europe (Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom), Mexico and elsewhere in Canada (Banff, Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg). Finally, the NEM has won 14 Opus awards (the last in February 2018) and recorded 34 CDs devoted to contemporary composers and music.
