The New Iceland Heritage Museum presents the unique story of New Iceland in Canada.
On October 21, 1875, a weary band of Icelandic settlers arrived on the shores of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba unaware that a winter of suffering awaited them. A relentless prairie winter, a smallpox epidemic and religious strife made life bleak that first year. It’s hard to imagine what they went through but they overcame these hardships and established New Iceland a colony with its own laws and consitution for a period of twelve years.
The museum's mission is to enrich lives and inspire learning, by providing a portal through which the story of New Iceland, the challenges and achievements of its people, and their relationship with the land and the lake can be experienced. We do this through the presentation of high quality permanent exhibits, travelling exhibits, programs and events.
