WHO WE ARE
NexusBC Community Resource Centre is a registered charity, located in Vernon, British Columbia and serving the North Okanagan by providing support programs for Volunteers, Seniors and Job Seekers. We strive to serve the community where needed by providing skills training for employment and support the independence of those 60+ by providing numerous services and resources.
HOW WE HELP
NexusBC – Nexus means connection therefore as a Community Resource Centre we connect people to resources. We house programs for Seniors, Volunteers and Employment, however we often connect people to resources throughout our community.
For Seniors: With the help of volunteers, we distribute coupons for fresh fruit and veggies to low-income seniors, give seniors rides to doctor's appointments or for grocery shopping, complete free basic income tax returns and pension applications, distribute Christmas hampers, find affordable housing, provide information on transportation, house cleaning and other home support services.
Employment: NexusBC assists job seekers in finding meaningful work through our employment training programs and one-to-one job coaching. We have a WorkBC full-service Centre in Enderby to serve the local community. We partner with Community Futures to offer a Jobs Fair which connects local businesses to those looking for work.
Volunteers: NexusBC is the local volunteer recruitment agency. As such, we are dedicated to the success of other non-profits in the community by promoting end encouraging volunteerism.
THE GREAT CANADIAN GIVING CHALLENGE
Our Better at Home program has always supported seniors with non-medical supports to help them live a comfortable life in their own homes longer. In mid-March 2020 when COVID19 affected the province of BC our seniors were identified as a population vulnerable to this disease and should be self-isolating to stay safe and healthy. Our program became part of the Safe Seniors Strong Communities initiative announced by the Seniors Advocate on April 4, 2020. Through this program our staff and volunteers are delivering the following services:
- grocery shopping and delivery
- pharmacy pick-up and delivery
- delivery of prepared meals either fresh or frozen
- virtual visiting to fight loneliness and isolation
- transportation to and from medical appointments
- finding resources and supports for any specific needs
As we serve the seniors who live in Vernon and surrounding areas, we are becoming aware of many significant needs, and are now helping individuals who have not previously been our clients. Recent social distancing measures have had a profound effect on people’s mental and emotional well-being, but none more so than for our senior community. When seniors become isolated, their mental and physical health may decline, putting them at a higher risk of developing heart issues, memory loss, and other serious conditions. We are hoping that through additional fundraising efforts our program can continue to serve these newly identified seniors; keeping them independent, safe and healthy. When you donate through the Great Canadian Giving Challenge, every $1 donated throughout the month of June, gives our organization a ballot with a chance to win an additional $20,000 for our program. What an exciting thought!
A $5 donation can ensure transportation for a senior to a vital medical appointment
A $30 donation can ensure a senior can have their home cleaned after 8 weeks of isolation
A $60 donation will help seniors’ security by keeping yards neat and tidy, and less attractive to potential housebreakers.
A $500 donation would provide a month of services for 10 seniors to live in a clean home, with a weekly grocery shop and delivery, transportation to necessary medical appointments, and receive a weekly friendly phone chat to prevent feelings of isolation.
A prize of $20,000 could support an additional part-time staff member who could support over 160 seniors for a year!
Please give generously!
Thank you for your ongoing support and an opportunity to win.
