North Bay & District Student Robotics

about

The creation of NBDSR aims to promote STEAM education among students aged 6 to 19, primarily through their participation in the FIRST Robotics program. This charitable organization provides financial support for more than 400 primary school students and 30 high school students annually in North Bay and the surrounding area.

Among the beneficiaries of this funding source is FIRST Team 1305, known as Near North Student Robotics Initiative, Ice Cubed, as well as other local branches of FIRST, including FIRST Lego Jr. (FLL Jr.), FIRST Lego League (FLL), and any newly formed FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams in the region.

The impact of NBDSR extends beyond North Bay and Nipissing, with their activities and acquired skills benefiting communities and individuals in other areas as well. Over 50 volunteer mentors, including engineers, technologists, teachers, entrepreneurs, and professionals from various industries, provide guidance to the students.

Elementary school students engage in robotics competitions using Lego robotics, while high school students utilize CAD software and a range of tools, from simple to advanced technology, to design and build unique robots for competition. The funds provided support the students by providing them with necessary tools, equipment, materials, and parts for their educational enhancement experience.

In addition to core robotics skills, the students also gain exposure to various other areas within and outside their respective programs. These include collaborative learning, graphic design, research skills, safety training, essay and letter writing, accounting, project management, and public presentation.

Students aged 13 to 19 also participate in outreach activities that promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through conferences, workshops, trade shows, and interactive demonstrations. Planning, administration, and organization of these events and excursions further contribute to the students' development of life skills.
