The North End Community Health Centre (NECHC) is a registered charity and a trusted anchor in Halifax’s health and social support landscape. In operation for over 50 years, we have continuously adapted, grown, and evolved to meet the complex and shifting needs of our community, especially those experiencing poverty, homelessness, and systemic barriers to care.
Founded through the vision and leadership of three women and a group of Dalhousie Medical School physicians, NECHC was Halifax’s first community-based primary health clinic. What began on Gottingen Street has expanded to include satellite locations, supported housing units, and a wide-reaching mobile outreach program extending our impact across the Halifax Regional Municipality.
Our interprofessional primary health care clinic is a leader in integrated, wraparound care. Guided by the social determinants of health, we provide comprehensive support that addresses not just medical needs but the broader realities of people’s lives. Our independent model allows staff the flexibility to deliver care in the right place, at the right time, and from the right provider.
We offer a wide range of services and programs, including:
- Primary health care
- Dental services
- Nutrition and dietitian support
- Mental health care and counselling
- Harm reduction and Safer Supply programming
- Mobile Outreach Street Health (MOSH)
- Supported and transitional housing
- Social work and case management
- End-of-life care coordination
- Advocacy and peer support
- Outreach and community development
Our diverse and dynamic team includes physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, peer housing support workers, harm reduction staff, dental professionals, occupational therapists, care coordinators, cultural support workers, administrative staff and many more.
We are also a teaching site and community partner, collaborating with local colleges and universities to mentor the next generation of healthcare professionals, and working hand-in-hand with organizations across legal support, housing, food security, mental health, and education sectors.
As a non-profit organization, NECHC is powered by the support of generous donors, dedicated funders, and strong partnerships with the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness and the Nova Scotia Health Authority.
