NORTH YORK WOMEN'S CENTRE

about

North York Women’s Centre (NYWC) has brought women together since 1988 to build together towards a vision of a world where all doors are open for all women.  As part of a network of women’s centres across Ontario our mission is to advance equality and to support all women and gender-diverse individuals, wherever they are on their journey, to unlock their potential and empower themselves to build a braver, more equitable world.

 OUR VISION:

We envision a world where all doors are open for all women

 OUR MISSION:

We work to advance equality and to support all women, wherever they are on their journey, to unlock their potential and claim their power to build a braver, more equitable world

 OUR VALUES:

  • Equity
  • Compassion
  • Social, economic justice and gender justice with a feminist lens
  • Anti-racism/Anti-oppression
  • Person-directed approaches
  • Low-barrier access to services

 OUR WORK:

NYWC operates within a feminist and anti-oppressive framework, and uses a trauma informed approach to conduct programming. We listen with compassion and empathy.  We take a holistic view on women’s issues, understanding the intersecting challenges that are barriers to women’s full, equitable participation in our society. NYWC advocates for systemic change by amplifying the voices of the women we serve, participating in community events, and connecting with other organizations to build together towards a more just future for all.

We offer low-barrier services to support all women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals, in particular those who have experienced or been affected by gender-based violence and abuse.

We offer free, personalized One to One Peer Support, Drop-In Services, and Group Programs that aim to meet all women where they are at with tailored, compassionate support.

All programs are free, delivered by women, for women and include:

  • Information & Resource Line: Confidential information and resource services via text, phone, or email. Staff will chat with you to identify your needs, refer you to one of our programs, or set up a one-on-one appointment with one of our team if you require more time. If we’re not the right people for you, we’ll refer you to another organization, support with system navigation, and check back in (if helpful) to assist with a soft(er) transition.
  • One-on-One Support: Confidential appointments offering personalized, short-term support for you. Staff provide peer support, resource navigation, and a caring non-judgemental ear. While not registered counselors, they are trained to meet you where you’re at, whether that’s listening, guidance, or resources.
  • Group ProgramsSkill-based group support programs that focus on building your strengths and personal power. All of our programs are multi-week, “closed group” programs that offer a compassionate approach to change, allowing for long lasting impacts that make a real difference.
  • The Lounge: The Lounge is a safe, inclusive space for women to build connections and access support. Activities range from creative crafts to informative workshops on essential services. No appointment or registration required unless specified, just drop in!
  • Community-Building: Creative programs that support social interaction, contribute to building a sense of belonging and community, and respond to local needs
  • Leadership Training: Training, academic placements and volunteer opportunities that build competencies and experience and support women’s economic justice and resilience
