Our Children’s Centre Society Daycare (OCCS) became a society in 1990 and officially opened its door in 1992. The society became a charity in 2007.
Our program -Direct care is provided to 45 children by 11 Early Childhood Educators, 1 Assistant Manager, and 1 Manager on the traditional territories of the Coast Salish, belonging to the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ communities. OCCS is committed to meeting the social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs of children in a child-centered environment. The programming is a balance of consistency and creativity to address the individual needs of children in our programs. The centre provides play opportunities to enhance children’s development through exploration, problem solving and social experiences. Emergent curriculum is also a part of the centre’s philosophy. This is where the children’s interests are what drives the curriculum and project work. We value building strong, trusting relationships with the families as another way to support the children and their learning. The educators use the BC Early Learning Framework as a guide and tool for our programs. Exploring and learning about the Indigenous ways of knowing and being to support our responsibilities as educators towards truth and reconciliation is another focus in our programs.
OCCS is one of few Greater Victoria group daycares to provide quality daycare for children from infancy to preschool. OCCS strives to provide a setting that families can enjoy from their child’s infancy until they send them off to kindergarten. OCCS ensures this consistency by offering continuous movement in the Centre. This means that a family who is offered a space in the infant program is already guaranteed a space in the toddler and preschool programs. This feature alone ensures OCCS will provide a long-lasting impact on families within the community. It also relates to the extensive waitlist of over 100 families in Victoria waiting for a space at the Centre. OCCS believes this list is indicative of the demand in the community for the excellent service provided by our centre. OCCS will continue to strive for a quality Centre that will be a sustainable long-term solution to the daycare needs of the community.
The Society Act managed by a Board of Directors of no less than four volunteers is established to manage and administer funds to ensure resources are in place to continue the program.
