Our mission is to inspire the global community to become Ocean Wise by increasing its understanding, wonder and appreciation for our oceans.
We need the ocean, and the ocean needs us. Through in-house research, world-class education programs, and innovative conservation solutions Ocean Wise empowers others to act for the ocean.
We are connected to the ocean. We rely on it for food, water and clean energy. Two of every three breaths we take come from it. The ocean is also our first line of defence against climate change.
Pollution, overexploitation of resources and habitat destruction are pushing our ocean to the brink. And it is not just the whales, turtles, coral and salmon who pay the price. Our own health and well-being is at stake.
Fortunately, we have the power to rebuild a resilient and vibrant ocean. Together, we can shape a globally sustainable future – for us, our children and future generations. Our ten years starts now.
About the Ocean Wise Conservation Association
With a 60-year history of conservation successes, Ocean Wise is a trusted partner for governments, industries, and communities. Our greatest strength is our ability to drive deep change by making ocean conservation matter to everyone – from everyday citizens to global policy leaders.
As a non-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of donors and supporters. Your gift will address three critical challenges – climate change, ocean pollution and overfishing. Some of our initiatives include:
- Seaforestation – Kelp forests absorb more CO2 than forests on land. By growing kelp and seaweed to scale, we can mitigate greenhouse gases and have a fighting chance to avoid the catastrophic results of climate change.
- Changing Arctic Ocean – Not only does losing Arctic ice jeopardize the wildlife and people who live there, it also significantly reduces the Earth’s ability to reflect the sun’s rays and regulate global temperatures —- amplifying the effects of climate change. We partner with Arctic communities, using best known scientific and Indigenous knowledge, to address key issues impacting northern ecosystems, beluga whales, Arctic fisheries and the communities who call the North home. We also work with small-scale Arctic fishers who don’t have access to national and international seafood supply chains and empower them to play a critical role in local economies, and domestic food security.
- Seafood Conservation & Markets - The Ocean Wise Seafood label is synonymous with sustainable seafood choice. Consumers can choose sustainable seafood at nearly 800 unique partners across Canada and ten other countries.
- Plastic-Free Oceans – Up to 13 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans annually. The Ocean Wise Shoreline Cleanup (formerly known as the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup) is one of the largest direct action environmental events in Canada, engaging tens of thousands of participants annually across the nation.
