ONE TO ONE is a unique children’s literacy program that provides one-to-one tutoring by trained volunteers to elementary school students who struggle with reading. Our volunteer tutors work in schools with students identified by their teachers as needing a boost in their literacy skills. Often these children do not receive literacy support at home. The program is aimed at the grey-area students who would otherwise fall through the cracks in the school system. 48% of Canadians have literacy skills below the internationally accepted standard required to cope in modern society. Equipping children with literacy skills sets them up to be healthy and active citizens, positively impacting our communities for generations to come. Research shows that receiving one-on-one instruction from a caring adult significantly impacts a child's reading skills. ONE TO ONE Literacy’s approach is to initiate early, critical intervention into the lives of potentially at-risk children. ONE TO ONE works to improve their literacy skills and self-confidence and provide them the opportunity to be successful in school, thus giving them hope for a brighter future.
