Food security is a priority for us at One City, and we are continuing to find a way to meet that need within our day-time program.
At this time, we are unable to prepare a full, hot meal each day, onsite due to the existing kitchen at the Trinity Centre. Many generous groups and churches have stepped up over the last month to donate meals and their time in preparing food to be served at the Trinity Centre. However, this is not sustainable in the long-term. We have found temporary solutions to cook in off-site kitchens and while we are very thankful for these spaces, it is very difficult to coordinate long-term.
In order to provide cooked meals to the public, we require a commercial kitchen that follows fire, health and building codes and regulations. We have reached out to various contractors and businesses to receive quotes for the renovations that are needed, and have built an estimated budget based on this information. We have also received discounted prices on the appliances and contracted work, for which we are very grateful. Some renovations have already begun, but we require the full funding to successfully complete the project.
Renovation costs will total approximately $202,000.00 including labour, materials, appliances, various equipment, drawings, and permits.
As of May 23rd, we have received $164,900.00 in donations already from the community, including the United Way of Peterborough & District, private donors, churches and Swish Peterborough.
Without a commercial kitchen, providing healthy and nutritious meals is an obstacle. We also want to have volunteers come and prepare the meals at Trinity like they did at One Roof, and also have them serve the guests, to see the impact that they make in our community.
We believe that hope is good infrastructure. We are hopeful that we will reach our goal with the help of our generous community.
