Opokaa'sin Early Intervention Society

about

Our Mission

Opokaa'sin exists to strengthen and support connections between First Nations children, youth, families, and community through advocacy, education, and sharing of First Nations culture.

Our Vision

Is one of a healthy community where First Nations children and families, through family, community and cultural support, reflect pride, respect, and self-esteem, and realize their full potential.

Opokaa'sin "All the Children"

Is a simple Blackfoot term used to describe all the joy and importance that children play within society, as well as the responsibility that comes with raising our children. Opokaa'sin Early Intervention Society was a joint initiative created in 1996 by various First Nation service agencies that shared a commitment to improving the well-being of all First Nations children, youth and families.

Over the years, Opokaa'sin has adapted to meet the changing needs of the urban First Nations population that it serves and is recognized as a credible provider of First Nation services. Opokaa'sin has developed a reputation for excellence and innovation, and the organization is becoming known in Alberta and outside the province as a model for First Nations service providers.

Currently...

Opokaa'sin has grown from offering youth programs in the downtown Lethbridge basement office to providing early intervention services to First Nations children ages 0-12 years, referral based youth mentoring services for First Nations youth and families, childcare and early learning programs (Head Start and Kindergarten), parent education classes, cultural programming, and so much more! In 2013, through various grants and donations Opokaa'sin was able to move into, what is now known as, the Opokaa'sin Child Development Centre - effectively allowing us to adapt and increase our capacity for our programming and provide services to those families that need it the most.
