Founded in 1999 by passionate arts enthusiasts, the Orillia & District Arts Council (ODAC) began with a vision to unite and support the local creative community. Within a year, we established our first downtown storefront at 23 Peter Street South, providing administrative support, meeting spaces, galleries, and storage for local artists and arts organizations.
ODAC incorporated as a not-for-profit in 2005 and achieved charitable status in 2006. Over the years, we've operated from various locations including 37 Mississaga Street West and the Orillia City Centre building, adapting to changing circumstances while maintaining our commitment to the arts community.
Today, we're located at Creative Nomad Studios (23 Mississaga St. West) and have evolved to serve approximately 40 member artists. We've successfully implemented numerous community programs including Culture Days events, Summer Nights in the Parks, the HeARTS Seniors program, and Discovering the Artist Within for disadvantaged women and children.
Around 2018, we revised our mission to better advocate for all art genres across North Simcoe, from Penetanguishene to Rama, recognizing the need for unity among diverse creative communities. A significant milestone came with the addition of a skilled grant writer to our board, enabling us to secure vital funding for arts-focused programs and cultural initiatives.
With support from a Community Recovery Grant, we developed a comprehensive Strategic and Revenue Plan and officially rebranded to North Simcoe Arts in fall 2024. We are now focused on implementing this strategic plan as a proactive advocate for all creative groups and artists, fostering partnerships and collaborations to enhance arts and culture throughout the region.
Our journey reflects resilience, community dedication, and an unwavering commitment to enriching local culture through the arts.
