The OXYGEN ART CENTRE is a multi-disciplinary artist-run center located in Nelson, British Columbia. OXYGEN provides space and time for the work, talk and community necessary for artists. The centre also provides a centre for the community to engage with art and literary practices and programs.
Our activities include classes, exhibitions, literary events and visual, literary and performance artist residencies. OXYGEN also works in collaboration with other institutions, organizations and individuals on special projects such as theatre projects, interdisciplinary performance works, curated gallery exhibits, art and literary events and artist exchanges.
OXYGEN’s education component offers the community twenty weeks a year of classes in writing, visual art, film, performance and creative process. OXYGEN offers advanced inquiry for artists who have completed basic training as well as community access for those in the beginning stages of their artistic development. Our faculty are experienced teachers, many with advanced degrees, who offer a learning atmosphere of collaboration and discovery, rich with cross-discipline dialogue.
As an Artist Residency center, OXYGEN works with the national and international art, writing and performance communities to offer a program of summer residencies for the purpose of nurturing the creation of new work. The residency program enriches our local community by providing stimulation through master classes, open studios, open rehearsals, studio visits and through the public presentation of work. The residency program enriches the larger community by offering the time and space necessary to create new Canadian work.
OXYGEN ART CENTRE’S Ideas Café takes place on Friday evenings throughout the fall, winter and spring. This series brings together an eclectic mix of artists, writers and community members for events that include slide lectures, artist talks, book launches, readings, panel discussions and more.
About Our Charity
OXYGEN ART CENTRE was founded as the Nelson Fine Art Centre in 2001 by working artists and writers. The center is located in downtown Nelson, British Columbia and occupies an 900 sq ft converted warehouse.
