Adult literacy is a serious issue in British Columbia and it is getting worse according to the research. Inability to read, write, or speak English and make calculations means lower levels of employment, lower wages, and the consequences can be devastating for overall quality of life.
The Parksville Qualicum Adult Literacy Society (PQALS) supports Parksville's Tutoring Program, which matches volunteer tutors with adults seeking help with basic literacy and/or English language assistance. This free service is provided one-on-one to any local adult needing help with reading, writing, basic math, computer skills and ESL.
PQALS helps the Tutoring Program by:
* raising awareness of adult learning needs in the community
* funding the purchase of learning material for the students and volunteers, and extra Program staff hours not funded through government sources
* providing funding for the training and continuing education of volunteer tutors.
Fundraising is an essential component of the PQALS board activity because we are also volunteers with no permanent source of funding. Your donation can make a difference!
