Kenya Orphan Sponsorship

With a meager $80CAD per child per year, PfID has been able to statistically eliminate the academic disadvantage of being orphaned. Actually, we’ve done much more. In a country where only 45% of public primary school students pass the grade 8 national exams, our orphans in Kenya, who are selected on the basis of need, not academic merit, have achieved a 100% pass rate since 2013. We sponsor over 60 orphaned and vulnerable children through primary school by providing a simple set of supports: a mid-day meal, a healthcare spending account, uniforms and supplies, and school-run remedial programs.

As of 2016, we worked with Simboyi Primary School to set up two student-led after school programs, at no extra cost: (1) a peer-tutoring program in which a select group of upper primary students help struggling younger students with basic reading and arithmetic; (2) a peer mediation training program in which a small group of upper-primary students participate in leadership workshops focusing on non-violent communication, active listening, conflict resolution, and structured social problem solving.

We have until October 31 to honor our funding agreement with Simboyi School, which works with our volunteer program managers to provide mid-day meals, school supplies, tutoring, and health expense reimbursements to the orphaned children. We have a shortfall of $3,000 and need your help, or renewed support, to make sure all sponsored orphans continue to participate in this life-changing program.
