"Receiving the Constance Beattie Bursary helped me connect with my profession. The PFC stepped up to support me when I needed help to grow my career. I will never forget this."  Dr. Alain Yvan Belanger, BSc, MSc, PhD, PT

About the Constance Beattie Memorial Fund Bursary

Constance (“Connie”) Beattie was an inspirational young physiotherapist. In 1949, Connie became the first physiotherapist to travel to the Arctic to treat Indigenous patients suffering from polio thanks to funding from Federal Health Department’s Indian Affairs Branch. She served her profession as President of her local district of the CPA, and was preparing to get married.

Connie was only 24 years old when she died. Her plane went down in the rugged country between Winnipeg and Churchill, killing all 20 people on board. She was flying to Winnipeg with 7 of her Indigenous patients, and then flying home for her wedding. Connie was the first casualty on service among members of our Association.

Her colleagues were inspired by her spirit and courage. In tribute to this courageous young physiotherapist, the Constance Beattie Memorial Fund was established. Constance Beattie bursaries are distributed by the Foundation to support continuing education courses completed by CPA members as they work towards their career goals.

Your donation to awards like the Constance Beattie Memorial Fund Bursary will be matched during National Physiotherapy Month, tripling the impact of your gift. Thank you to the CPA and CPA Past President Catherine McGinley for their generous matching gift pledges.

In the spirit of Connie Beattie, and in support of the physiotherapy profession across Canada, make your donation today. All gifts received will go towards physiotherapy research grants, scholarships, and bursaries.
