The Powell River Salmon Society (or the PRSS) is a charitable organization that aids in the restoration of wild Pacific Salmon stocks, gaining help from volunteers and donations. This effort then contributes to community sustainability, educational opportunities, and Coastal identity and influence.
The PRSS’s small staff of three permanent employees works together with volunteers from the community who annually contribute over 13,000 volunteer hours. The community works together with the PRSS to operate three salmon enhancement facilities in the Powell River area which annually raise over 1.9 million fry for release into the ocean. The PRSS also coordinates a classroom incubator program, field trips and releases which help to instil an inherent respect for salmon in the community’s youth. The PRSS contributes a large proportion of its physical and human resources to increasing our knowledge base, monitoring and restoring the vital natural spawning and rearing habitat of the wild stocks
