Raincoast Research Society's primary goal is research into orca communication. Two decades were spent publishing research into the impact of salmon farm pathogens on wild salmon to protect the orcas’ food resource. Today, with the removal of salmon farms from the Broughton Archipelago, the fight to protect wild salmon from industrial aquaculture continues elsewhere on the BC coast. With salmon rebounding in the Archipelago, we have returned to our work in understanding orca communication through our research initiative, Project Fathom.

Project Fathom is a unique collaboration of scientists with extensive expertise in orca biology, behaviour, and acoustics. We will use deep learning methods to gain insights into orca communication. With many decades of combined orca research experience and data, there is significant potential for breakthroughs in understanding orca communication.
