The Regional Independent Students Association (RISA) began operation and became a registered Canadian charity in March 1993. RISA’s mission is to address the unique needs of youth between the age of 16 and 24 years who are at increased risk of not completing their education due to deteriorating family structures or other circumstances beyond their control. RISA’s mission is fulfilled through the operation of two youth residences in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Edwards House houses six males and Brockwell House houses eight females. RISA is open to both youth who are in the care and custody of the Minister of Community Services and those supported by the Youth Services program.
RISA provides its residents with something that many of them have never known – a safe and supportive home environment. In addition to providing youth with an opportunity to focus on their education, RISA supports youth in navigating barriers that they face such as trauma, mental and physical health concerns, unhealthy relationships, and addiction. RISA’s programming places a strong emphasis on the development of important life skills. Through meal preparation, chores, and other household activities RISA strives to instill healthy living habits. Similarly, through adherence to reasonable curfews, behavioural guidelines, mandatory study periods and our summer volunteering/employment program, we provide our youth the knowledge and skills essential to becoming financially independent and positive contributors within in their communities.
