Our Mission
Our Mission
Our mission is to engage youth to achieve their full potential. We seek to build motivation, through an engaging environment, and to expand and enrich each participant's life experience.
Our Goals
The short-term goals of the program are to build academic skills, build self-confidence and self-esteem, and to improve fitness levels and nutrition awareness.
Mid-range goals include ensuring that all students matriculate from grade to grade each year, and building on character values such as integrity, respect, and good sportsmanship.
The long-term goal of the program is to follow the students through to graduation from high school, to provide career counselling in grades 11 and 12, and to assist with placement in college or university.
About River City Squash Organization
River City Squash Organization will provide academic tutoring, squash instruction, mentoring, and community service opportunities for underserved urban youth in Kamloops.
We provide an after-school and out-of-school program for at-risk children and youth in Kamloops. Academic tutoring, squash coaching, community service opportunities, and cultural trips are provided through the program.
River City Squash is using the urban squash program model, which started in Boston in 1996 with an organization called SquashBusters; this model has been used successfully with hundreds of inner-city youth in cities across the United States and Canada.
The sport of squash is used to engage the students, and is also used as a tool to teach self-reliance, focus, respect for others, and sportsmanship. At each session students also receive academic tutoring and homework help from our volunteers.
