Our Mission
Romero House is a community of welcome and accompaniment for newly arrived refugee claimants. We believe that by being with, by living with, we can offer a warm welcome and live out a Way of Being that recognizes our community humanity. We are a community of faith and hope in which strangers become neighbours.
About Romero House
Romero House consists of four houses and a neighbourhood centre in the West end of Toronto . We provide transitional housing to ten refugee families, as well as walk-in settlement support to any refugee who comes through our door.
Our accompaniment and walk-in support includes: navigation of the refugee determination system and various settlement processes; referrals to legal and social services; information about rights and support in advocacy for refugees in individual situations; support in accessing education, employment, housing, furniture etc; access to the Romero House clothing boutique; a weekly food hamper program for residents etc. We are also engaged in collaborative advocacy work with local, regional and national partners to make sure that our systems and institutions are just and welcoming to refugees.
Our vision is embodied by being together as a community. Romero House Staff and workers live with the Romero House resident families as neighbours and companions, seeking to realize our vision of accompaniment in their daily life and work. The community this forms sets Romero House apart from most shelters and allows us to welcome refugees with open arms and hearts and provide the support they need to prosper in Canada.
We grateful that you are considering walking with us as we walk with refugees.
