ROYAL CANADIAN MILITARY INSTITUTE

about

THE MISSION: ROYAL CANADIAN MILITARY INSTITUTE The Institute is an independent member-supported organization which promotes the study and discussion of military history, defence, security and international affairs, along with the operation of its museum, library and archives for the benefit of its members and the interested public, through the provision of exceptional services within a unique collegial environment.

OUR HISTORY: OVER 130 YEARS OF TRADITION In 1890, the officers of the Toronto Garrison founded the Canadian Military Institute with the Governor General, Lord Stanley, as its patron. In 1907, Governor General, the Earl Grey laid the cornerstone at 426 University and in 2012 Governor General David Johnston did the same for our new quarters. With our nine pounder cannons flanking the front entrance, the RCMI was a distinctive landmark throughout the 20th century. Well into the new millennium, we are fullfilling our mandate to study and support Canada’s endeavours in the fields of defence, security and foreign relations, within the unique, collegial and refined atmosphere to be found at the Institute.
