About Ruff Start Animal Rescue Foundation

Ruff Start Animal Rescue Foundation is an Alberta-based registered charity dedicated to giving neglected, abandoned, and vulnerable companion animals the second chance they deserve. Although we officially became a registered charity in 2026, our team has been rescuing animals since 2018, operating as an established rescue organization since 2021. Since then, we have helped approximately 500 animals find safety, healing, and loving forever homes.

While we primarily rescue dogs, we have also stepped in to help cats and other small companion animals when the need is urgent. We work throughout Alberta, with our largest volunteer networks in Calgary, Edmonton, and Medicine Hat, supported by dedicated foster families and volunteers across the province.

Unlike traditional shelters, Ruff Start is entirely foster home based. Every animal lives in a home environment where they receive individualized care, allowing us to better understand their personality, medical needs, and behaviour before matching them with the right family. We believe that successful adoptions begin with truly knowing each animal.

Many of the animals who come into our care have experienced neglect, abandonment, medical challenges, or a lack of stability. We are especially passionate about helping animals with special medical or behavioural needs—those who are often overlooked simply because they require a little extra time, patience, or support. Using force-free, evidence-based training methods and compassionate care, we help each animal build confidence and prepare for life in a permanent home.

Every donation directly supports the animals in our care. Contributions help provide veterinary treatment, vaccinations, spay and neuter surgeries, emergency medical care, prescription medications, behavioural support, training, food, transportation, and the supplies our foster families need to give each animal the best possible start.

At Ruff Start, we believe every animal deserves more than rescue—they deserve the opportunity to thrive. Whether they come from overcrowded shelters, difficult living situations, owner surrenders, or other rescue partners, each animal is treated as an individual with their own story and their own future.
