Raises funds to purchase life-saving equipment for NICUs in hospitals across Canada, for babies born premature and critically ill.
Our Mission
The Sandra Schmirler Foundation is a registered charity established in honour of Sandra’s lasting legacy as a loving mother and the skip of Canada’s first Olympic gold medal curling team. Recognizing that all “Champions Start Small,” the Foundation has granted more than $10 million to purchase life-saving equipment for newborn intensive care units (NICUs) in over 110 hospitals across every province and territory. For 25 years, our donors have helped save the lives of thousands of babies born too soon, too small, too sick, or too far across Canada.
About Sandra Schmirler Foundation
The Sandra Schmirler Foundation was created in 2001 as a legacy to three-time Canadian and World curling champion and Olympic gold medalist Sandra Schmirler, in recognition and celebration of her love of family.
Sandra Schmirler helped us understand that life is precious and must be appreciated every day because it can be taken away in an instant. While Sandra lived only to the age of 36, she understood that we must place value on more than just winning and losing; we must prioritize the simple things that are near and dear to us all, in particular, our families.
Sandra’s daughters, who were just 8 months and 2 years old when she died, remain actively involved in the Foundation and continue to honour their mother’s memory. Every year, they take part in the Sandra Schmirler Foundation Telethon live on TSN from the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
The Sandra Schmirler Foundation is dedicated to helping families across Canada with newborn babies born too soon, too small, too sick, or too far. Sandra’s will to live is reflected in the fight for survival, often against the odds, that is epitomized in these miracle babies.
The Foundation remains committed to keeping Sandra’s love of family alive by helping babies born premature or critically ill have the best possible start in life — a chance to grow, thrive, and become champions, just like Sandra.
Our Vision
That every baby born in Canada has the opportunity to grow up and become a champion, just like Sandra Schmirler.
