SIMRES

about

Crazy about whales? Yep, us too.

We are a community-based, non-profit organization building awareness and igniting stewardship of marine life and ecosystems in the Salish Sea.

We promote scientific, evidence-based research and observation about the endangered Southern Resident and Bigg's killer whales, humpback whales and all marine species, and we provide support and facilities for research and education on Saturna Island.

SIMRES operates an underwater audio hydrophone network, positioned to listen to both whale populations and vessel traffic in Boundary Pass. This location is an area of environmental concern as increased vessel traffic has an impact on marine life, including all the whales species that forage here.

We collaborate with the Southern Gulf Islands Whale Sighting Network, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria and Vancouver Island University, Fisheries & Oceans Canada, Parks Canada, and the Port of Vancouver – Echo Program. We hold an annual series of SeaTalks which are public educational events about the marine environment.

We sponsor a variety of community-science initiatives, including rockfish conservation, bull kelp mapping, eelgrass restoration, the annual SeaStar Bioblitz and the Christmas Bird Count.

Generous support by our donors provides funding for these volunteer-led conservation initiatives.
