Dedicated to improving the quantity and quality of food in the Scarborough community.
Founded in 2018, Scarborough Food Security Initiative (SFSI) was created on Suman Roy, Founder and CEO's hope and passion.
Suman knew that no one should go hungry, and everyone should have access to delicious, nutritious food. Food nourishes our bodies, it connects us with others, and it tells us where we came from. At Scarborough Food Security Initiative, our mission is to make good food easily accessible to everyone in our community.
In 2018, Suman and his friends got together because they saw and witnessed the community's food inequality; they worked together to prepare 1000 holiday hampers that supported individuals, families, and children in December.
What started as a small organization quickly grew to 4 food banks, a three day a week mobile, healthy meal program out of a food truck, provides weekly educational initiatives, launched the first-ever "Grocery Store Model," and continues to work with students in the community through partnership co-op programs.
With the heart and support of volunteers, donors and corporate sponsors, we are breaking barriers and leading the way in operating an organization that breaks stigma and gives the client exactly what they need. We have recently launched our "Grocery Store Model" based on the idea that choice matters – our clients can choose what they're bringing home to their families for dinner.
COVID-19 has directly impacted our community. We are seeing an increase in clients visiting week after week. The effects of COVID-19 rippled into our community, adding more barriers and reducing services and access to other Food social service agencies. We knew it was our time to step up and build and expand on the fundamentals and heart that started our organization in 2018.
With the support of our volunteers, we have continued to serve the Cliffside Oakridge, Markham and Kennedy neighbourhoods in Scarbrough. Each week, roughly 100 volunteers work diligently to help 3000 Scarbrough residents and their children.
The Scarborough Food Security Initiative is a non-profit organization that relies solely on the individual, corporate sponsors, and short-term community grants. As of January 2021, Scarborough Food Security operates with three staff and 100 volunteers to ensure our mission's delivery.
