The Scugog Council for the Arts (SCA) is the voice and home for arts and culture in Scugog and surrounding areas. It advocates for the arts, attracting a range of co-investors such as funders, donors, members, the public, artists and volunteers. The SCA works to realize the creative potential of all citizens and assists in the development of a shared and authentic cultural identity. As a hub in the community we believe that the arts are essential to the quality of life in Scugog and surrounding area, and take a leadership role in supporting a vibrant local cultural scene that embraces theatre, music, dance, visual art, craft, literary arts, and arts education. It serves as a catalyst for community and economic development, and cultural tourism.
Established in 2005, the SCA is a registered charitable organization with a volunteer Board of directors and one part-time staff member, our Arts Administrator. The SCA has received grants from Ontario Trillium Foundation, a Compass Grant for volunteer development, Ontario Arts Council grants for operations, and Ontario Summer Employment Program grants. We’ve celebrated an Ontario Heritage Trust Community Recognition Award for Cultural Heritage.
The SCA Resource Centre and gallery provides exhibition space, programs, resources and arts information to the community and is open five days per week. The SCA holds an annual juried art exhibitions and monthly curated exhibits of SCA member artist work, holds the SCA Literary Contest, presents music events including Tafelmusik, participates in Canada Day Celebrations with the Township each year, partners with Lake Scugog Studio Tour, and leads in the presentation of Culture Days each September.
Launched in 2015, Spark the Arts, our granting program, helps support diverse arts programming in Scugog. For example we’ve provided grants for theatre productions highlighting our own history, youth programming in Scugog schools, and art programming as a tool for mental health and wellness.
We partner with other local arts organizations, Durham Tourism, Central Counties Tourism, the Port Perry BIA, the Scugog Tourism Working Group and artists.
We strive to maximize our contributions to the vibrancy and quality of life in our community, as we support art for arts sake.
