Help SSISC protect the Sea to Sky from invasive plants and animals!
Our mission: The Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council (SSISC) is a non-profit organization that aims to minimize the threat of invasive species in the Sea to Sky region. This area contains unique and biodiverse ecosystems, from the deep ocean waters of the Howe Sound to the high alpine meadows of the Coast Mountains. Native plants and animals are threatened by invasive species that are able to grow rapidly, form monocultures, and compete for essential resources. What we do: Our Field Team conducts invasive species surveys, monitors and maps infestations, and implements strategic mechanical or herbicide treatment methods. Most of our work is focused on invasive plants, but we also carry out surveys for invasive animals. Our Education & Outreach Team works to raise awareness about invasive species in our local area, through digital and in-person communications. This includes creating online resources, giving presentations, facilitating training opportunities, attending public events, and hosting community weed pulls.Invasive species management is a collaborative process, and we partner with local government, first nations, other NGOs, and community members to conduct our work. How you can helpAs a non-profit, we rely on the generous support of our community to operate. You can help fight the spread of invasive species by making a donation to us. Prevention is the most effective tool in the fight against invasive species, and prevention begins with education.By donating, you are funding hands-on community science initiatives and experiential learning activities, such as:- European Green Crab monitoring in Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound (a community science, volunteer-based initiative)- Experiential learning activities at local schools- Community weed pullsYou can also volunteer with us and subscribe to our e-newsletter for updates, training opportunities, events, and more!
