Tailoring Unit to Empower Underprivileged Women in Kerala

Sewa Canada International Inc. in collaboration with its partner Sewa Bharathi, a registered charity, in Kerala, India proposes to provide employment to initially to 10 underprivileged women, by setting up a tailoring unit to manufacture garments. This will provide a source of income for 10 families who currently live in poverty. Most of these women are either widows or single mothers trying to make ends meet to sustain their families.

The unit will set up Tripunithura Municipal area, near Kochi, in the province of Kerala, India. A suitable building has been secured by Sewa Bharathi. The rent and facilities will be funded by Sewa Bharathi. A lot of individuals especially women, have come forward to volunteer and help setup, train and operate this unit. Trainers with formal experience in tailoring and garment manufacturing will be selected to volunteer at the unit. These trainers will train identified 10 women, before embarking on the project of manufacturing garments to be marketed to the general public and retailers. 

Setting up the plant requires capital costs for machinery, furniture, tools, raw materials, augmenting power facilities and miscellaneous costs, apart from rental, power costs, transportation, communication, travelling and some admin expenses. The total costs involved in Indian Rupees is estimated at INR 850,000 i.e. C$14,000.

The capital cost involved for machinery, tools, furniture, power upgrades is INR 500,000 i.e. C$ 8,000

- 10x Wooden Stools

- 5 Dress racks

- Power upgrades

Sewa Canada International intends to raise $8,000 to cover the above mentioned capital costs.

The products designed at this facility will comprise men's and women's clothing, based on demand of the retail network accessible to Sewa Bharathi. Marketing of these products will be done through this network, direct sales and through and personal contacts. 

Implementation of this project is expected to take 3 months. The payback period is estimated at 5 years and will employ a total of 12 women, including the trainers. The intent is to make this unit self sustaining with ability to pivot to clothing and fashion trends popular in the market.
