Shadowland Theatre empowers communities through art, amplifies our collective voices and brings hope in challenging times.
Our mission is to create original theatre that entertains, engages, and inspires people to interact positively with each other and their environments.
For over forty years, Shadowland has delivered arts programming to underserved urban and rural communities in the GTA and beyond. Led by Artistic directors Anne Barber and Brad Harley, Shadowland Theatre employs theatre and visual arts techniques such as spectacles, parades, animations, puppetry, shadow shows, and masks to explore our histories, the land, and today’s relevant issues.
Our work is always free and accessible to all. We often present our programs in collaboration with local community arts and social services organizations.
Shadowland Theatre was founded in 1983 on Toronto Island by a collective of visual and theatre artists. We continue to work on Toronto Island through year-round youth programming, workshops and public events. We have a studio in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto.
Shadowland Theatre has won three Dora Mavor Moore awards for Outstanding Costume Design and in 2009 was voted Best Grassroots Theatre by NOW magazine. In 2023, co-Artistic Director Anne Barber won the Ontario Arts Leadership Award from local Parkdale MPP Chris Glover.
