Shelburne County Youth Health and Support Association aims to empower all young people to discover meaning and direction for their lives, develop positive relationships with others and to contribute positively to the communities in which they live.
The mission of Shelburne County Youth Health and Support Association (est.1998) (SCYHSA) is to achieve a healthy youth population based on the broad social determinants of health.
SCYHSA has two mandates:
Direct service: We offer youth in the Shelburne County supportive counseling, referrals, information, advocacy, and programs on a wide range of issues. The main focus of our programs is personal empowerment, growth, and health including sexual health and violence prevention.
Social Change: We work to unite youth, community and government to achieve opportunities for youth to thrive in rural Nova Scotia landscape. We use the community development model and work with other partners to address gaps in services for youth. The core services of SCYHSA are provided in:
- A safe and accessible space, which is open, welcoming and non-judgmental.
- An environment where activities, programs and services are developed by staff in consultation with youth.
- A place that offers resources, referrals, information and programs.
Our programs aim to promote well-being including empowerment, independence, choices, equality and equity. We believe in individual rights to make decisions and have choices.
