Shelldale Family Gateway

about

A preventative support model that enriches lives of children & youth

Shelldale Family Gateway (formerly Better Beginnings, Better Futures) came into existence in 1991, built from a vision for a neighbourhood of healthy children, healthy families and healthy communities.  In today’s world, children and youth are at an increasing risk for poor mental health.  The risk is even higher if they live in low-income communities, where families have fewer supports.  Shelldale Family Gateway has demonstrated that the best way to help these children have good long-term outcomes is by collaborating with the community and supporting the families – children, youth, adults and seniors – rather than just focusing on the child.

Shelldale Family Gateway is a provider of EarlyON Programs for children ages 0-6 years, provided by the County of Wellington.  In addition – and just as importantly – is the need for early intervention and primary prevention for children and youth beyond the age of 6 years as well as their families. This type of programming comes with a significant price tag: one the community can’t afford on its own. However, the social cost of NOT providing these services is even higher, and one no one can afford to pay.

As happens with so many not-for-profit organizations, sustainability of programs is always the number one concern.  Fundraising and grants cover only so much, and only on a program-to-program basis and so sustainable solutions must be found!

The Shelldale Family Gateway neighbourhood is  characterized by high density housing; the largest number of social housing units in the City; a large newcomer population; a significant number of single parent led families; and, the lowest incomes on average in the City.  Research shows that these kinds of socio-economic indicators can negatively impact on children’s wellbeing.  Shelldale Family Gateway provides a place to help mitigate these impacts through enriching opportunities for children and families, effective and accessible services, and strong community leadership.

What community members are saying:

“I was amazed when I discovered that every child can be fed to start the day off right and have a brain fueled for the school day, parents can have guidance and support to help with their challenges, children have after-school activities, women can come together to share and learn in a safe environment . . . families from all different nations come together to grow produce at the community garden plots. Truly, I have never seen anything like this.”

“If it wasn’t for [Shelldale Family Gateway], I wouldn’t be who I am today,” said Andy, another community member.

“They’ve taught me so much about life and social skills.”
