About Sisters of Charity - Halifax

For nearly 175 years, the Sisters of Charity-Halifax have had an impact on the various communities in which they live and minister. They respond to the needs of today’s world in education, health care, pastoral ministry, social justice and community outreach. An international organization based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sisters of Charity - Halifax currently live and work across Canada, the United States, Belize and Peru.

"Corporately and individually we strive to develop a sensitivity toward those whom the world oppresses, to right in great ways or small the injustices we see around us, to heal the wounds of the embittered, to speak peace to the troubled, to urge the mighty to right wrongs. We live our mission through loving presence, through prayer, through ministry with others."

In 2024, the Sisters of Charity will mark the momentous occasion of 175 years of joyful witness to love: the love of God, of one another, and of all persons. Through 175 years of responding to the cries of the poor, racial justice, and the climate crisis, collectively our ministries have been possible with the support and partnership of our generous benefactors.

From tuition support for first generation college students, to resources aiding migrants fleeing their troubled homeland, to water projects in areas ravaged by the climate crisis, and resources to support women and children fleeing domestic violence—our work is far from over and there has never been a greater need to continue our mission.

Loved and energized by the One who calls us, our charism of charity compels us to respond to the cries of the poor, support efforts to combat climate change, and shape community initiatives to end systemic racism. We also support the needs of our elder Sisters, whose wisdom and tireless charism still inspires.
