Practical and emotional support for seafarers visiting Port Saint John: free Wi-Fi, recreation, local transport, and crisis support.
Seafarers are the backbone of global trade, responsible for transporting over 90% of the world’s goods.
Despite their crucial role, they often work in dangerous conditions, face long periods away from their loved ones, and have limited access to communication and support.
Thanks to our caring community of supporters and volunteers, The Saint John Seafarers’ Mission is part of a vital support network for these dedicated men and women who keep our marine traffic and our economy moving.
Support could mean something as simple as a quiet, stable place away from the constant motion of the sea. Or, support could be as profound as providing help in times of crisis — such as ensuring respectful and culturally sensitive care for a sick or deceased seafarer.
Whatever the situation, we’re committed to responding to the needs of the seafarers who visit Port Saint John.
Your thoughtful gift today will help us continue this essential work and provide a home away from home to those who keep our global economy moving.
Yours, with gratitude,
Tony Dickinson

The Mission to Seafarers: A History of Compassion and Support
Founded in 1856, The Mission to Seafarers was established to address the spiritual and practical needs of seafarers, who often faced isolation and hardship while at sea.
The organization traces its roots to the Bristol Channel Mission, initiated by Anglican priest John Ashley in 1835, who was moved by the challenges faced by sailors in the Bristol Channel.
Here in Saint John, an early iteration of the Mission was established in 1877 by Lady Alice Tilley, the wife of Sir Leonard Tilley, a Father of Confederation. Then located on Prince William Street, the Mission provided a safe, refuge for sailors arriving at the Port of Saint John. It offered recreational facilities, a place to write letters home, and comfortable accommodations.
Over the years, The Mission to Seafarers has grown into a global network, providing vital support in over 200 ports across 50 countries. The Mission offers a range of services, including ship visits, drop-in centers, and emergency assistance, ensuring that seafarers have access to practical, emotional, and spiritual care.
Your caring support will help The Saint John Seafarers' Mission continue its essential work, providing a lifeline to those who keep our global economy moving.
