The Society of Saint John the Evangelist is a monastic community of The Episcopal Church and The Anglican Church of Canada. For many years, the Society maintained houses in Canada and continues to serve the Anglican Communion in Canada by leading retreats, workshops and preaching across the country several times a year. The Society was founded in 1866 at Cowley, Oxford, England by Father Richard Benson and Father Charles Chapman Grafton. The Brothers of SSJE live in a monastery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There, they welcome guests for retreat in their guesthouse, provide spiritual direction and also open their chapel to the public for services and moments of quiet throughout each day. The Brothers also maintain a rural retreat centre in West Newbury, Massachusetts. Their vibrant website www.ssje.org offers daily meditations delivered to 20,000 people daily as well as a rich archive of sermons and special series’. And since 2011, the Brothers have offered a monastic internship program to young adults. This growing program provides the opportunity for interns to live alongside the Brothers and experience the daily rhythms of the monastic life while deepening their study of the faith. Donations made to SSJE via Canada Helps are tax deductible and are used exclusively to further their ministry in Canada.
