The mid Annapolis Valley region has a long history of supporting health care for its citizens. A movement led by first World War Veterans Dr. J.A. Sponagle and Major Melbourne P. Neily resulted in the first hospital in Middleton. This was officially opened in 1921 in honour of Veterans of World War I -- hence, its name Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The new hospital was generously supported by local organizations and individuals and this spirit of philanthropy has endured for generations.

Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation was established in 1972 to help purchase equipment for the hospital and support local health care programs. Since the 1970's, donations and bequests to Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation have allowed us to provide millions of dollars to purchase equipment for the hospital and to support local health care programs. The Foundation has been a key player in numerous community partnerships including the award-winning Annapolis County Seniors' Safety program, Kings Seniors' Safety, the Trans County Transportation Service's Medical Shuttle, and the Annapolis County 'Active Kids Healthy Kids' program. Also, we are an active partner in ongoing physician recruitment and retention efforts in the area.
