Since the 1980s the Sooke Region Historical Society has placed heritage shield signs throughout the region, with almost 60 signs along roadsides and pathways sharing stories of people and places of the region.
As signs deteriorate and language changes over time, we are working to replace those signs.
From summer 2024 to winter 2025 we inventoried current signs with photos and condition reports. We are now studying design and structural options, as well as the subjects and stories shared, to create updated signs.
We will work with the T’Sou-ke First Nation, Sc’ianew Nation, Pacheedaht First Nation, Indigenous communities, the District of Sooke, the CRD, and community groups throughout the Sooke Region to ensure that content is developed in a collaborative way. This is how the original signs were developed, and we will continue to work respectfully with the communities we serve.
