With the support of businesses, community groups and individuals, Soroptimist International of Kawartha Lakes (SIKL) has been able to assist young women to further their education, in order to make a better life for themselves and their dependents. These women have overcome adversities like poverty, domestic and sexual violence, divorce, the death of a spouse, or other life challenges and yet have had the courage and determination to forge ahead.
SIKL also delivers a girls’ program that is transformational, teaching life skills with interactive lessons and running games. Developed and taught by SIKL members, the 2018-2019 school year had 57 girls in grades 4 to 6 participate in the ‘Girls Of Action & Leadership’ (GOAL) program. Through our fundraising efforts, we are able to supply each girl with proper attire, including new running shoes, socks (when needed), and a T-shirt. The program culminates in a 5k run/walk and a celebration of their accomplishments, including a GOAL medal.
