Our Mission: The Souris River Watershed District was established in 2020 as a combination of the Turtle Mountain Conservation District (TMCD) and the West Souris River Conservation District (WSRCD). Both organizations work collaboratively with local landowners and partner with Manitoba Water Stewardship to maintain and improve sustainability within the district. The Souris River Watershed District recognizes the important connections between human health and watershed health. Through education, innovative leadership, community engagement, and partnerships, the SRWD strives to manage the watershed as a complex, sustainable system, emphasizing prevention and protection programs. Since 2011, both TMCD and WSRCD have partnered with the Manitoba Burrowing Owl Recovery Program (MBORP) to help re-establish the endangered Burrowing Owl population in southwestern Manitoba. MBORP has three main goals: promoting Burrowing Owl populations through the reintroduction of owl pairs and young back into the wild in southwestern Manitoba; conducting research to understand limiting factors and emerging threats to the species; and providing education through public presentations and one-on-one meetings with landowners to discuss grassland conservation and how to improve habitats for Burrowing Owls.
