South Alberta Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Network

about

Our Vision:

An organization dedicated to delivering comprehensive, compassionate, and coordinated regional responses to FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) across the lifespan, respectful of race, culture, ethnicity, and community diversity.

Our Mission:

To increase regional capacity by enhancing existing FASD services and developing new services in four primary areas: awareness; prevention; assessment and diagnosis; and support for our clients and their caregivers.

Why we need your support:

It is estimated that 1 in every 25  babies born in Alberta is affected with some form of FASD - a disorder that causes brain damage in unborn babies from alcohol exposure during pregnancy. An estimated 176,000 Albertans are living with FASD. Each year, more than 450 Alberta babies are born with FASD. The impact of FASD on individuals and families is significant, not to mention the increasing financial costs borne by many sectors of society, including child protection, education, health and social systems.

National research has shown that approximately 61% of pregnancies are unplanned, and 40 to 60% of women are unaware of their pregnancy until several weeks have passed. Knowing these statistics, it is not surprising a significant number of unborn babies are placed at risk for being prenatally exposed to alcohol.

For more than 25 years our organization has been working to reduce the incidence of FASD—a lifelong disability that affects people of all races, ages, cultures, ethnicities, classes, genders, and sexualities. Although current funding allows our Network to maintain direct service programs through a collective of community agencies, it does not allow for enhancement of services through essential prevention and awareness initiatives. Thus, we rely on support and contributions from the community, businesses, and volunteers.

In addition to current funding sources, we are seeking long-term and mutually productive partnerships with corporations, government bodies, service clubs, and other like-minded organizations and individuals to help change how people understand and respond to FASD.
