about

Introduction to South Region Parents as Teachers Society

Our Vision: All children will learn, grow and develop to realize their full potential.

Our Mission: To provide the information, support and encouragement families need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life through a comprehensive home visitation program.

Parents as Teachers (PAT) is an international, evidence-based early childhood home visiting program that helps parents of young children from prenatal to age five build parenting skills and learn how to keep their children safe, healthy, and learning.

The PAT model offers a cohesive package of services for families with young children framed around four dynamic  components: Personal Visits, Group Connections, Child Screenings, and Resource Network. Rigorous training, a robust  curriculum and quality standards guide PAT’s effective, high-quality work with families.  The internationally recognized evidence-based home visiting model is backed by 40 years of research-proven outcomes for children and families. South Region Parents as Teachers (SRPAT) is proud to be the sole international affiliate model program in Canada!

SRPAT serves families in Lethbridge and across southwest AB from Bow Island to the Crowsnest Pass. Since 1996, SRPAT has been supporting families and children with tailored, personal home visits; group connections; screenings; and resource connections to

- increase parent knowledge of early childhood development and improve positive parenting practices

- improve parent, child, and family health and well-being

- increase children's school readiness and school success

- prevent child abuse and neglect

- Improve family economic well-being

- Strengthen community capacity and connectedness

The core values of the PAT model are:

- parents are their children's first and most influential teachers

- the early years of a child's life are critical for optimal development and provide the foundation for success in school and life

- research should be the foundation of parent education and family support curricula, training, materials and services

- an understanding and appreciation of the history and traditions of diverse cultures is essential in serving families

- All young children and their families deserve the same opportunities to succeed, regardless of demographic, geographic, or economic considerations
