Our volunteer-led charity is inspired by vision of a permanently protected South Shore where together, biodiversity and people thrive.
South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) is a registered Canadian charity based in the traditional lands of the Wendake-Nionwentsïo, Haudenosaunee and Mississauga Nations.
Prince Edward County's South Shore encompasses the undeveloped public lands on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario. Despite 200+ years of human use for recreation and agriculture, it hosts a very high level of biodiversity and it is home to 41+ species at risk.
Our volunteer-led organization is inspired by the vision of a permanently protected South Shore where together, biodiversity and people thrive. Founded in 2018, we educate and advocate for the protection, preservation and restoration of South Shore lands and waters.
Since 2018, we’ve:
- Become our area’s lead environmental advocacy group
- Established our expertise and fostered positive, two-way communications channels with governments, businesses, groups and individuals
- Succeeded in advocating for the new Monarch Point Conservation Reserve – 4,000 acres of permanently protected and undeveloped South Shore lands
- Engaged 1,000’s of people in educational webinars, strolls, public events and more
- Build awareness about the South Shore’s 41+ Species at Risk, remarkable biodiversity and rich cultural history.
We invite you to join the 1,200+ South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) members who support our mission, vision and strategic initiatives.
Your one-time and/or monthly charitable donations help us to advance our work to protect Prince Edward County’s South Shore Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) to maintain or increase the biodiversity of its terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Every donation of $25 or more automatically includes an individual 2024/25 South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) membership ($40 for a family membership).
Our joint initiative includes local, provincial and national partners in conservation, such as: Alliance to Protect Prince Edward County, Birds Canada, Hastings Prince Edward County Land Trust, Kingston Field Naturalists, Nature Canada, Ontario Nature, Prince Edward County Field Naturalists, Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory and Quinte Field Naturalists. We also collaborate with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the leading non-profit private land conservation organization.
