$25 helps restore Hudgin Log House in South Shore, Prince Edward County

Every dollar counts. We're restoring the heritage-designated Hudgin Log House so it can become the 1st-ever Field Centre in Prince Edward County.

Your $25 gift will help to fund Spring 2024 restoration work under the guidance of renowned architect Edwin Rowse and supported by a committee of volunteers and Hudgin family members.

Building materials, expert craftspeople and other foundational costs are what stand between us and opening the doors on Hudgin House Field Centre.

A one-time or recurring monthly gift of $25 will enable our team to continue restoring this rare example of a log home on the South Shore of PEC.

The sooner we can reach our fundraising goal, the sooner we can create a gathering place for cultural and natural heritage studies, public educational events and conservation research.

About Us

South Shore Joint Initiative is dedicated to protecting, preserving and restoring Hudgin Log House for all future generations. Situated close to Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County and adjacent to the new Monarch Point Conservation Reserve, the House is a rare example of area’s recent cultural heritage.

Circa 1860, Moses Hudgin, a United Empire Loyalist descendant, used local white cedar to build the log house. Moses and his wife Ann (Mouck) raised nine children in the compact two-bedroom home. Three generations grew rye, buckwheat, corn, potatoes and turnips, harvested fish from Lake Ontario and local game. Living Hudgin descendants recall spending their childhood at the house, running through the fields, picking berries and enjoying their grandmother’s home cooking.

In 2018, Nature Conservancy of Canada purchased Hudgin Log House and surrounding land. South Shore Joint Initiative is responsible for insuring and restoring the building that will become Hudgin Log House Field Centre.

Restoration of Hudgin Log House is led by local resident and well-known Ontario conservation architect Edwin Rowse. Watch Edwin speak about the philosophy and principles of conservation being employed in the hose in this this video.

Your gift to our Hudgin Log House fund will help us bring this rare example of adaptive reuse of a historical building to life!
