About Our Charity

Speaking of Dogs Rescue Program is a volunteer-based dog rescue in the Toronto area that has been helping dogs in need since 2001.  We are dedicated to assisting dogs from shelters as well as taking in dogs surrendered by their owner when space allows.  We have a focus on helping senior dogs. Our dogs are lovingly cared for in foster homes until we find them a suitable forever home.

Our Goals

To offer shelter or sanctuary for dogs, provide them with needed medical attention, and actively seek new homes for rescued dogs.

To relieve the suffering of dogs needing care and attention due to illness, maltreatment or poor circumstances, and in particular, provide and maintain rescue homes for the reception, care and treatment of such dogs.

To support other dog rescue groups – sharing knowledge, connections and, where possible, financial resources.

To promote humane behavior towards dogs through education of our volunteers and the public in matters pertaining to the welfare of dogs in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among dogs.

Our Programs

Foster Program: Rescued dogs are taken into Speaking of Dogs’ volunteer-run foster homes. They are assessed and treated for any medical conditions and groomed. Once deemed ready for adoption, they are listed on the rescue’s website, from which a careful and detailed adoption process takes place.

Forever in Foster Program: Sometimes a dog is considered unlikely to be adopted, due to medical condition and/or advanced age.  In that case, the dog is placed in a Speaking of Dogs Forever in Foster home, where they stay for the remainder of their days, with all costs paid by the rescue.

The Leg-Up Sponsorship Program enables Speaking of Dogs Rescue to act in a stewardship role, providing financial support to selected rescues facing exceptional medical bills and/or related costs (e.g. removal of dogs from hoarding/puppy mill situations).   

Newsletter/Education:  Speaking of Dogs Rescue provides education on the humane treatment of dogs, via our monthly newsletter, our FB page, website and through policies which guide practices for foster parents and adopters alike.

Flight Sponsorship Program: Speaking of Dogs Rescue sponsors flights from remote Northern communities (where there is often an over-population of dogs and puppies) to southern Ontario where adoption prospects are greatest
