The Special Olympics Opening Eyes program is changing lives in communities across the globe by providing comprehensive eye assessments, prescription eyewear, sunglasses, and sports goggles to Special Olympics athletes.

Their findings have revealed that of the athletes they screen, 23% have never had an eye exam, 38% are in need of new prescription glasses, and 16% have an eye disease that may have otherwise gone undiagnosed.

At the end of a 12-step visual exam, a decision is made if new glasses may be helpful. Athletes who need them are then able to choose from a selection of free eye wear. 

The Opening Eyes program also works to provide continuing education to optometrists and eyecare practitioners to familiarize them with the best techniques for testing this patient population, and make permanent changes in their attitudes towards their care.
