Founded in 2011 by choir conductor Alice Hietala, Spectrum Queer Choir is a non-auditioned community choir that creates a place of celebration, belonging, and creativity for the 2SLGBTQIA+ people of St. John’s, NL. Together, we sing, connect and grow through music, and uplift our community. We welcome all who wish to sing, regardless of experience, ability, or identity.
We are currently fundraising towards our dream of attending the upcoming Canadian Unison Queer Choir Festival in Vancouver May 2026 - yes, about as far from Newfoundland as it could possibly be in Canada! The current political and economic uncertainties make this an even more challenging goal, and yet more needed than ever.
At this time when our community and all other marginalized groups are under attack, we need defiant queer joy, we need each other, and we need to sound our gathered voices more than ever. The world needs our voices more than ever. There will be 28 queer choruses from across Canada, with well over a thousand singers altogether, and our hearts need to be among them.
We ask for your help.
