We support safe & healthy participation in sports & physical activities across Alberta through education & support services.
The Sport Medicine Council of Alberta (SMCA) is a not-for-profit organization that provides grassroots information on injury prevention and management, sport taping and strapping, sport nutrition, sport and mental health, and concussion. We provide information through educational courses, and support services. Mission: To encourage and support safe and healthy participation in sports and physical activities across Alberta. Vision: The SMCA is a known and respected community resource that supports Albertans of all ages to be physically active, manage risk, and play safely.History: Founded in 1983, and funded by the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation (now, the Government of Alberta - Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Branch), the Sport Medicine Council of Alberta (SMCA) was comprised of sport medicine physicians, sport physiotherapists, athletic therapists, and sport scientists. The cooperative function of these individuals was to promote and coordinate the provision of sport medicine programs and services for the Alberta sport community. These professional members provide their services to assist in making Alberta a healthy and safe environment for sport and recreational activities. Now, the SMCA collaborates with a variety of groups that helps support the mission and vision of the SMCA.The SMCA also manages the Alberta Concussion Alliance, and runs the annual Alberta Concussion Awareness Day. The Alberta Concussion Awareness Day was established to increase concussion awareness by providing credible evidence-based information and resources to encourage action across Alberta. This day is for all Albertans, regardless of their level of involvement in sports, recreation, and physical activities. Each year the Alberta Concussion Awareness Day takes place on the last Wednesday of September, which falls within National Concussion Awareness Week. For many people, this day will come and go like any other. But for those who have had a concussion or know of someone who has had a concussion, they may wonder why every day isn’t a concussion awareness day.
