“Staff helped me understand and accept my Mother for who she became after her diagnosis with dementia.”
St. Michael’s Health Group takes pride in providing quality of life and comfortable settings for residents who call St. Michael’s home. Every day we are guided by our goal of providing innovative care focusing on the resident and their individual needs. However, more and more we are providing care for those who may not be able to speak for themselves or identify their own needs. Almost 80% of our long term care residents are living with a cognitive disability. Dementia care is an uneasy and emotional journey for all involved. It is with this in mind that we are embarking on a project to provide specialized equipment and environmental changes to our long term care centre to support residents living with dementia. These additions will include technology and activities mounted on the walls for residents to access and interact with; new lighting that is programmed to change lighting levels to what the resident needs as the day progresses; cleverly placed art to help them find their way – these are just a few of the innovative concepts already proven to work.
But there is a challenge. These improvements are not covered in the funding we receive. As a result, we have launched a campaign to raise $250,000 in support these enhancements. Our goal this Christmas is to raise $20,000 towards this project.
