Our Mission
The Standing Wave Society exists for the purpose of promoting contemporary music from Canada and the World through concerts, recordings, commissioning and workshops presented by a permanent ensemble. The Society researches repertoire, actively markets and fundraises in support of programs, enables rehearsals and presents concerts. Interaction between the ensemble and the contemporary music community takes place on a frequent basis through organizational partnerships, the appearance of guest performers and composers and participation in national and international festivals.
About the STANDING WAVE SOCIETY
Made up of six of Vancouver’s most sought-after musical multitaskers, Standing Wave is dedicated to commissioning and performing contemporary chamber music by Canadian and International composers.
Standing Wave ventures into a wide array of musical worlds with passion and assurance. From the intricate complexities of the music of Howard Bashaw and Chris Paul Harman, to the bold avant-garde jazz of Tony Wilson, and the anarchic electroacoustic imaginings of Giorgio Magnanensi, the ensemble has commissioned and premiered over 100 works in its 30 year history.
Since its formation as a non-profit society in 1995, the ensemble has presented an annual season of concerts in Vancouver and has toured across Canada. Standing Wave has been recorded many times for CBC Radio and has released five recordings, two of which (20C Remix and New Wave) won the Western Canadian Music Award for "Classical Ensemble of the Year." 20C Remix was also nominated for a JUNO award. Since 2003, Standing Wave has been an Ensemble-in-Residence at UBC.
