We are St. James Anglican Church located in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. We are a warm and welcoming Anglican church and congregation that gathers for spiritual fellowship and guidance.
St James is a diverse community of those from many Christian, non-Christian, and no-faith backgrounds. We come to St. James for Christian community, to find God in relationships with neighbours and new friends. We come for lessons from the incredible life of Jesus Christ. We come for spiritual rest, time to think, pray, and center on God, for comfort in hard times, and gratitude in good times. We come to serve God, each other, and the world. We are not perfect. We trust in God’s gentle grace and unconditional love. We seek meaning for the life God has gifted us.
We believe that we are called to witness the presence of God in our lives using the example of Jesus’ selfless love for humanity. God the Spirit inspires us to seek and serve all persons loving our neighbours as ourselves. As such, we see the parish to be a diverse, open, and welcoming community of faith for all who desire to further their relationship with Christ or deepen their spiritual journey.
We strive to fashion our life as a community so to offer:
- preaching that invites you to think;
- a church that will walk with you in your journey to question, to seek, and to find God.
- a congregation and church community that cares about you and your family
- opportunities to be involved in many aspects of parish life including worship, administration, community activities, and outreach
- a church that invites and celebrates diversity
- traditional and contemporary liturgy that through its form and consistent nature allows us to enter into deeper communal prayer.
We do: We provide pastoral care to people through home and hospital visits. We support people as they mark major life moments such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
We have a variety of church groups and activities in which to participate: Christian Meditation, Laughter Yoga, Drumming Circle, Wednesday Faith and Fellowship, Sunday Coffee Hour, Altar Guild, Servers Guild, Readers, Greeters, Choir, Men’s Group, Mothers Union, worship at a local Retirement home and a local long term care facility, our Missional Engagement Leadership Team, Jesus Rocks, Flower Group, Parish Council, Outreach, Administrative committees, book studies, and online streaming team.
We take to heart the command of Jesus to love our neighbours. Our church supports the Halifax Ecumenical Food Bank. St James has its own food cupboard ‘God’s Tickle Trunk’. It is regularly stocked and funded by our church and congregation. We make our church hall available to community groups to use at low cost, including ‘The Club Inclusion’. The Club’s programs are fully accessible to all youth and adults. We support Refugees, this past year we sponsored two different people to come to Canada and we are working to get someone safely here in 2025. We believe that everyone has the right to fun, friendship, and a full and varied life of their choosing.
We stream our Sunday services through our channel on YouTube, and on Facebook Live. We welcome all to stop by to watch, listen, and participate. We try to make our services as accessible as possible. With that in mind, our streamed services feature text for reading, prayers, and lyrics. Our streamed services are Closed-captioned, high-definition, and in stereo. We hope you find something that uplifts you, touches you, makes you pause or reflect, and meets your needs spiritually. We would love to hear from you.
By supporting our parish with your financial gift, you help us help others. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
